      New Orleans writer Michael Patrick Welch authored the novels The Donkey Show (Equator Books) and Y’all’s Problem (Dirty Coast), as well as the music and art book New Orleans: the Underground Guide (LSU Press). Before moving to New Orleans in 2001, Welch served three years at the St. Petersburg Times (now the Tampa Bay Times). His journalism and other stories have appeared in many New Orleans publications as well as at McSweeney's, Oxford American, Newsweek, Salon, and other national venues. Welch also leads New Orleans’s psychedelic rock band the White Beach, and sings and plays guitar in a Prince tribute burlesque show. On the side he teaches an English class wherein students write and record original rap songs. Welch has a daughter named Cleopatra and a pygmy goat named Chauncey Gardner.
