Going Really Down Under

Photographer Jared O'Sullivan shows us the sometimes beautiful underbelly of Australia. He insists that the pictures are meant to be a “celebration of life separate from commercial and material gain.” The shit’s still pretty weird in our opinion.

These images are from two new series by Australian-born, Berlin-based photographer Jared O’Sullivan. The photos were taken while he was still living in the Land Down Under. When most people think of Australia, they think of beaches, surfing, kangaroos, beautiful women, and chill vibes. Jared’s images, however, show a different side to the island—one that reminds you of it’s penal colony beginnings. In the pictures, Jared captures some pretty strange individuals. He explained to us how he met all of these questionable characters: “Along the way I spent time talking to rural firefighters, transsexual prostitutes, bikers who now own bars, middle-aged transients who have been everywhere, rose vendors, and young greasers. I became fascinated by these characters, the environment, and the disparity of human existence.” Jared insisted that the pictures are not meant to be a depiction of Australia, but a “celebration of life separate from commercial and material gain.” The shit’s still pretty weird in our opinion. More of Jared’s work can be seen here.
