Oakland police smashed through a car window yesterday when they spotted a baby, strapped into a car seat, locked in a hot car. Except when they broke through the window, they discovered it was not a baby, but instead a very realistic-looking doll. The police have not yet figured out why the doll was buckled into the car seat.

It's illegal in California to leave a child in a car unattended if there are "conditions that present a significant risk to the child's health or safety," like the the weather being hot. The temperature was in the high-70s in Oakland yesterday, according to Weather.com.
