People trying to log onto the Barriere, BC Chamber of Commerce site this morning will be greeted to images of prolapse and deep throating as the organization's web domain was taken over by pornography.

The group assumed its domain was automatically being renewed but this week discovered that wasn't the case in a "horrible" way, according to Virginia Smith, mayor of the small central BC town, who spoke to the Canadian Press. The new owners, Pornolaba, are demanding $9,700 [$6,700 USD] to forfeit the URL. Smith said she considers that "extortion."

"I think it's a horrible situation and I don't think it speaks too well of the chamber or general mankind as such, with that kind of a site," she told reporters.

The Barriere chamber has apparently hired a lawyer to look into the matter but in general, there are few options once a domain expires and someone else buys it. Meantime, the group has already found a new home.

"I can see both sides to the story, that yes, perhaps the chamber should have been far more diligent. That unfortunately didn't happen and now we have a situation that has to be dealt with," said Smith.

"It's just one of those horrible tragedies."
