An Ex-RCMP Officer Was Charged for Having Way Too Many Guns

A former PEI RCMP officer now faces 12 weapons related charges after police seized 70 guns from his home earlier this year.

Nova Scotia's Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) has been investigating Jeffrey Ray Gillis, 43, since February after they responded to two alleged assault incidents at his home and casually stumbled upon his alarmingly large collection of guns.

Gillis also retired from the force that month.

According to a SIRT report released yesterday, his charges include unlawful storage and possession of firearms, unlawful possession of prohibited weapons, and five counts of false reports with a peace officer about the destruction of firearms.

He's expected to be in provincial court on Monday.

As far as cases of RCMP bad behaviour go, we don't know what's worse (or more bizarre): Gillis with the guns, or the Nova Scotian officer who was charged last week for stealing and selling crack cocaine.

What up with those Maritime Mounties?
