Lilacs & Champagne's New Song Is Cinematic Hip-Hop for Your Daydreams

The guys from post-rock band Grails have taken a break from introspective guitar music to make hip-hop beats with their side project. Their new song, "Roses & Kisses," will chill you out after your a post-rock induced existential crisis.

The Portland, Oregon, band Grails makes music that ranges from depressing post-rock to depressing psychedelic rock. All their records are melancholic and thoughtful in a way that makes stuff that isn't necessarily good still feels significant or poignant for some reason. When I listen to Grails I feel like a sad, bearded man sitting on a mountain, watching a bunch of bandits take over a village but too old to go down and teach those whippersnappers a lesson. Which is cool, if that's what you're going for.

Interestingly, the band's founders, Emil Amos and Alex Hall, also make instrumental hip-hop albums in a side project called Lilacs & Champagne. Hip-hop beats aren't what I'd expect from the dudes from Grails—but that's what makes the new band so refreshing.

Lilacs & Champagne's new song, "Roses & Kisses," is mellow and cinematic, built around a drawn-out beat and an ethereal vocal loop. The song will chill you out after your post-rock induced existential crisis.
