Quebec has been back under a Liberal government for just under a year and already students are setting off another massive strike. At the time this article is being written there are some 80,000 students out of the classroom protesting austerity measures. They've increasingly started hitting the streets of Montreal denouncing the latest round of education cuts. The Montreal Police, who themselves are in the process of mounting pressure tactics in response to cuts to their pension plan, have found little to no sympathy for protesters, instead meeting them with tear gas, stun grenades, and other chemical irritants. This past week saw intense clashes during a couple of nighttime protests that snaked through the streets of downtown Montreal. The protests are scheduled almost every day leading up to the huge province-wide protest on April 2. Stay tuned for more coverage.
