A FILM IN THE FACE OF GOD - THE THREE MOTHERS

The Three Mothers is, of course, not one movie, but is instead Dario Argento's 30-year spanning trilogy. From 1977's beautifully ultra-violent Suspiria, to 1980's slightly confusing Inferno, through to 2007's Le Madre Terza (also known as The Mother of Tears), the death count is high, and the spectacle of death only intensifies. A woman actually has her stomach sliced open and is then strangled with her intestines in the final chapter of the trilogy. Hungry yet?
However, I must admit, aside from Suspiria, I am afraid I can't really recommend either of its sequels, as they aren't really very good, and retain little of what makes Suspiria the classic it is. The whole ambiance is lost (maybe replacing Ghoul with Keith Emerson for the Inferno soundtrack was a bad call), and visually it isn't as pleasing either. Suspiria's soundtrack somehow transcends the movie from horror to something else, bordering on extreme paranoia, anxiety and terror. And the set design? Insane. The final installment... Hey, it was made in 2007, so you kind of know what to expect. It does feature his very beautiful daughter Asia however, which is a plus (was the ten-second nude shower scene really necessary, daddy?). Hmmm. Anyways, here are some of my favourite shots from those three, the majority coming form you know which...
