Tim Hetherington
We’ve got some sad news from Libya. Our friend and contributor Tim Hetherington died during a siege in Misrata yesterday. Tim was a photo journalist of the highest caliber and winner of the World Press Photo of the Year in 2007. He was also nominated for an Oscar earlier this year for his work as co-director of Restrepo, a documentary that we think perfectly captures the visceral experience of being a soldier in one of the most dangerous places in Afghanistan, the Korengal Valley. Back in 2008, Vice was lucky enough to feature his series on morbid Liberian street art and talk with him about his time in the war-torn country.
Tim’s final Twitter post sheds a stark light on the current state of Libya:
“In besieged Libyan city of Misrata. Indiscriminate shelling by Qaddafi forces. No sign of NATO.”
