Imagine being able to create music with only your mind. And not just that tune that you whirl around your head that inevitably sounds like a choking vole as soon as it comes out of your mouth, but a fully formed banger – something that people would lose it to in a club, before back-slapping you and telling you how awesome you are for making their night. That's what Smirnoff have done with their Mindtunes project – recruiting DJ Fresh (ie creator of the kind of drum 'n' bass that sounds best blasted out of a convertible Wrangler somewhere near a beach) and PhD. Julien Castet, a leading brainwave technology expert, to enable a group of physically disabled music fans (Andy, Mark and Jo), who can't play regular instruments due to their disability, to create a music track controlling musical software with nothing but their mind.I don't really get the science, and I don't expect you to either because it presumably has a lot to do with brain waves and circuits and stuff you have to spend decades learning about. But the project is pretty mind-blowing, the final track – produced by DJ Fresh, once Andy, Mark and Jo finished up – is great and the video above outlines how the whole thing was done.
