Former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi has been sentenced to four years in jail for tax fraud relating to the acquisition of TV rights by his company Mediaset.

He has also been ordered to pay £8.3 million to the Italian tax office and banned from public office for five years.

It looks unlikely, however, that Berlusconi will ever actually spend any time in prison, as his sentence will be reduced to one year (under a 2006 measure that takes three years off any crime committed before that date) and will be entitled to two appeals before any definitive sentence.

The former PM, who also faces accusations of sex with an underage prostitute, has since announced that he is considering bringing down current prime minister Mario Monti's government.

After a 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Canada's British Columbia triggered tsunami warnings and coastal evacuations in Hawaii, scientists realised that there wasn't actually too much to worry about and downgraded the level of potential threat.

The first waves were reported to reach 2.5ft, much smaller than the predicted 6ft swells.

Gary Glitter was arrested in relation to a police inquiry over the sexual abuse of minors by TV presenter Jimmy Savile.

The disgraced glam rock star has a history of child abuse, jailed for four months in 1999 over child pornography charges and three years in 2006 for molesting two young girls.

Hurricane Sandy, which has already caused devastation in the Caribbean, is set to hit New York City this week and has prompted Mayor Bloomberg to order a mandatory evacuation of 375,000 people in low-lying areas.

Governor Andrew Cuomo also announced that the city's transport system would be suspended ahead of Sandy's arrival.

The hurricane is also set to hit a number of states key to the 6th November Presidential elections.

A man is in hospital after accidentally hanging himself with a Halloween prop noose in a Milton Keynes nightclub.

Frank McMahon, owner of the Pink Punters club, described the prop as "a rope with a large noose that doesn't go tight around the neck" and claimed it is hung "low down to the ground".
