Tony Blair was accused of being a war criminal this weekend, but you were too busy breaking the law to notice.

DESMOND TUTU SAID TONY BLAIR SHOULD FACE CHARGES FOR BEING A WAR CRIMINAL
Other people have been saying that for years but Desmond Tutu is a pretty big deal

(via)
Noted human rights activist and anti-apartheid campaigner Desmond Tutu wrote an article for The Guardian this weekend in which he called on Tony Blair and George W Bush to be tried for war crimes. He was referring, of course, to the two former statesmen's roles in the invasion of Iraq in 2003, which led to a war that only officially came to an end last year and the repercussions of which continue to be felt in the country. Tutu said that the invasion, "premised on the lie that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction", has "destabilised and polarised the world to a greater extent than any other conflict in history". His argument that Bush and Blair should be tried by the International Criminal Court goes pretty much like you'd expect it to – if the aim is (or was) to try people like Saddam Hussein, Robert Mugabe and Osama bin Laden in the Hague, then why not Western leaders whose actions result in similar bloodshed? The current stats point to the Iraq War having a death toll of 110,000 Iraqis and 4,500 American soldiers. "In a consistent world, those responsible for this suffering and loss of life should be treading the same path as some of their African and Asian peers who have been made to answer for their actions in the Hague," he wrote. Which is a pretty big statement coming from a guy who collects peace prizes like most people collect bar receipts.

Blair's response? "In a healthy democracy people can agree to disagree."

ONE OF THE GUYS WHO FOUNDED THE PIRATE BAY WAS ARRESTED
Gottfrid Svartholm Warg was hiding from his Swedish jail sentence in Cambodia

(via)
Gottfrid Svartholm Warg was arrested in Phnom Penh at the request of Swedish police this weekend. The co-founder of file-sharing site The Pirate Bay had an international warrant issued against him in April after he failed to turn up at his trial relating to copyright offences or to serve a subsequent one-year jail sentence. The 27-year-old was convicted, along with fellow Pirate Bay founders Fredrik Neij and Peter Sunde, of encouraging copyright violations back in 2009. They all had their one-year sentences reduced to between four and ten months on appeal a year later, but were ordered to pay nearly £4.4m in damages to music and film companies. Warg's lawyer claimed he missed the original trial due to illness.

STEVIE WONDER IMPLIED THAT FRANK OCEAN MIGHT BE 'CONFUSED' RATHER THAN GAY
Which is a pretty patronising thing to say

(via)
In an interview with The Guardian, Stevie Wonder implied that Frank Ocean – who recently (sort of) came out as gay – might simply be "confused" about his sexuality. "I think honestly, some people who think they're gay, they're confused," Wonder said. "People can misconstrue closeness for love." Which, on the face of things, seems like a pretty weird thing to say. It's patronising, definitely, but does Stevie Wonder really think that all gay people are confused? Well, er, no. Because in the same interview he stated his belief that just some might be, rather than that they all definitely, definitely are. He also issued a (sort of) apology via Advocate: "I'm sorry that my words about anyone feeling confused about their love were misunderstood. Clearly, love is love, between a man and a woman, a woman and a man, a woman and a woman and a man and a man." So that's that cleared up, then. I'm sure we won't be hearing any more about this story. Definitely not any "love is blind" gags. Definitely NONE of those.

SOME WHALES DIED IN SCOTLAND
Don't try to go on land if you are a whale

(via)
Sixteen pilot whales have died after getting beached on the east coast of Scotland.

Vets are currently trying to save ten more who also got stranded in Anstruther in Fife.

It's a shame, obviously, but maybe it's better this way than if they'd made it further north to the Faroe Islands, where they love to stab whales to death.

A SELF-PROCLAIMED MESSIAH DIED
The guy who started the Moonies was 92

The Reverend Sun Myung Moon, who told everyone he was the messiah and started a global religious movement called the Unification church, died this weekend. It says on Wikipedia that the term "Moonies" is a pejorative used to refer to people who believe that he was in fact the messiah, but if it is offensive, not many headline writers seem to be caring right now. Moon died of pneumonia at his home in South Korea. He was 92. His church was most famous for marrying thousands of its followers simultaneously at mass weddings and later exploded into a massive business empire that owned newspapers, hotels, universities, ski resorts and a football team.
