Dance subcultures in Mexico City are divided into different tribes. Mexican music fans, each with distinct taste and style, have divided, coalescing around specific sounds and scenes.
Tribal, Cumbia and Ruidosón are all electronic hybrids of traditional Mexican regional music, and for the past five years have been gaining traction inside and outside the country, their popularity accelerated by the internet. While bands can now achieve early international success incorporating regional Mexican music – such as Norteño and Cumbia – with electronic production, the newest homegrown sounds are even more exciting and experimental. All of this comes together in our film 'Mexology Music'.
In 'Mexology Music', el Jimador meets two of the record labels responsible for some of the most exciting new music to come out of Mexico City and the roster of artists at the forefront of this incredible scene.
We meet the guys behind NAAFI – the collective and record label who aren't only responsible for some of the best parties in Mexico, but the most avant-garde, experimental and danceable music in Mexican history. We go to some of NAAFI’s legendary parties and meet the DJs and producers who help to create its inimitable sound, including DJs Lao, Smurphy and Paul Marmota.
Next up, we get to know the guys behind Electrique – one of Mexico’s coolest and most fashionable labels. Formed by techno and disco DJs from Mexico City who play the most exclusive parties and clubs, Electrique put Mexican disco on the map, invading the internet and touring the world with their huge dance sound. We follow them to Ceremonia festival and Club Rhodesia, where we meet the label’s founder as well as some of the biggest and best names on their roster – including Eddie Mercury, Juan Soto, Bufi and Andre VII.
Join us as we get to know the key players behind both labels and take a tour of their studios, see them spin at the city’s coolest parties and learn all about the amazing way these young Mexican musicians fuse elements of their own traditional culture with electronic dance music to create a sound like nothing else.
