MAN FROM 7/11, HE SAYS YES

By ALEX DUNBAR

Pretty soon in 7/11’s across the country you’ll be able to buy a delicious banana, ensconced (as you might expect) in a thick yellow peel, covered in a sheath of plastic. You might think there’s no excuse to plastic wrap a banana, seeing as it’s one of the few fruits that comes covered in a thick, easily removed, protective shield. Well, according to 7/11, there are great reasons for this excess. In an interview with USA Today, CEO Joseph DePinto explained the banana wrapping initiative saying “Our customers want yellow bananas — not brown.” Of course, since banana peel browning is caused by oxidization it would require a vacuum sealed bag to prevent the change in color. The 7/11 bags are clearly not emptied of oxygen before sealing, so there’s literally no point to this. It’s a feat of unbridled wastefulness non pareil. It’s crazy that even as the “green-movement” gains traction and popularity in this country, the champions of wastefulness continue their endless ante-upping. It’s like they can’t help themselves from fucking up the environment as much as humanly possible.

If you want to know where this plastic wrapper will go after you’ve finished your snack, watch here.
