MEDICINE EXPLAINS ACUPUNCTURE, FINALLY

By JAMES TENAFLY

So anywayz, back to the real question: how does acupuncture work? It increases blood flow while reducing inflammation. And those crazy charts? Acupuncturists for centuries have plotted out the locations of big nerve bundles in the human body. The charts show where to aim a needle for maximum nerve-impact, encouraging the blood to flow along meridians in the body.

Despite new, high-tech research into acupuncture, many doctors remain uninterested in the treatment. Some even sound like total assholes:

“Many medical experts remain deeply skeptical about acupuncture, of course, and studies of its effectiveness have been mixed. “Something measurable is happening when you stick a needle into a patient—that doesn’t impress me at all,” says Edzard Ernst, a professor of complementary medicine”

Well, you can’t please everybody. Maybe Edzard should consult one of the many (formerly) anxiety-ridden, acne-marked, arthritic, depressive, asthmatics who’ve seen their life transform with a few pin pricks.
