Motherboard heads to Vancouver to interview the designers of the 2010 Olympic Games medals, Omer Arbel and Corrine Hunt. Arbel is an internationally acclaimed architect and industrial designer while Corrine is a First Nations artist from the Raven Gwa’waina clan of the Kwakwaka’wakw village on Vancouver Island. The 2010 medals are of particular interest because they are the first medals to be made out of recycled metals and circuit boards and look nothing like any other past medals. Canadian mining company Teck Resources was able to harvest the necessary gold, silver, and bronze from the circuit boards of old computers and have it melted down and cast back into what are now the 2010 Olympic medals. Motherboard speaks to the artists in Arbel’s studio, and gets a look at the making of the medals.
