MY WEEKEND WITH AMERICA'S LATEST PATRIOTS
But when we went out and met with folks at the tea parties, Oath Keepers rallies, and elsewhere, they weren’t the fringe crazies I’d (ignorantly) expected. Sure, there were a few rogue whack jobs here and there, but hell, I have a crazy aunt and the guy who sits next to me at work speaks to his computer in German when it’s not working. They’re everywhere.
The folks we met were just confused, scared, and angry, and I can relate to that. The world’s a complicated place, and when you mix in a massive economic blackhole, a couple go-nowhere wars, and a changing landscape of global power, I’m surprised I don’t have a nosebleed just thinking about it. These are some people who are freaked the fuck out and want someone (the President) or something (the New World Order) to blame. I get the impulse, even if I have some serious reservations about the reasoning. And I’m not sure that their all-encompassing fear is really that much different from blind hope, either. Just a lot more of a bummer to talk about in a parking lot in Texas.
PS: Heidi and Spencer just appeared on Alex’s radio show last week. I don’t know how that relates to this, but its a good little WTF’er for you. Click here for to a’listen.
