Die Antwoord is the kind of band that shows up and you wonder how the world existed without them. DJ Hi-Tek came out first in a grotesque mask started spinning manically to a heavy-thumping base. Then Yolandi started dancing and teasing the crowd with a partial moon, alternating between super sweet soprano and fierce shouting. Ninja entered the stage and the energy went through the roof. We don’t think we’ve ever seen a band this amped to be onstage or have such intense chemistry. The way they were pointing to certain body parts during the psychotic dance moves they were doing also gave us a pretty good idea of what all those zef words they throw in mean. They talk a lot about being satirical, and we believe them. As performers though, they’re dead serious. We’ve got the backstage view right here. See for yourself.
