A 79-Year-Old Man Just Got Arrested After 56 Years on the Lam

He successfully broke out of jail in 1959 and has been in hiding until yesterday.

Yesterday, Frank Freshwaters was arrested in Florida after a 1959 jailbreak sent him hiding from the law for half a century. On July 3, 1957, Freshwaters hit and killed a pedestrian in his car. He pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 1-20 years, but his punishment ended up being suspended and Freshwaters was slapped with five years probation instead. He broke parole and landed in prison until September of 1959—when he pulled a daring escape. He was discovered by the US Marshals Cold Case Unit in Florida after 56 years. Fox Cleveland reports that Freshwaters was going by the alias of William Harold Cox but readily admitted his real name once he knew the jig was finally up.
