Sodom always get lumped in with their Teutonic brethren
Destruction and
Kreator as causing much of what went on in the late-80s and early-90s black- and death-metal scene.
Did you know there are two completely different versions of
Obsessed By Cruelty?
Steamhammer Records put out a 12-track version in Europe, then the band rerecorded the album in its entirety (minus "Volcanic Sluts") for the US release by
Metal Blade, home
Slayer until they were signed to Def Jam by you-know-who. I have more time for the Steamhammer version, personally. It's pretty much the blueprint for all the 90s black metal I love, but never rule out the importance of its precursor
In the Sign oF Evil. "
Burst Command Til War" will hopefully be with me till I am old and decayed.
However, only recently have I discovered the 1987 EP "
Expurse of Sodomy", and it contains my favorite Sodom track by far. The style is different to the previous releases as are the lyrical themes, but it is quintessential thrash, regardless. The opening riff, the way it cascades up, then down, the breakdown, the solo... It's all there and all perfect. Here, have a listen and tell me I am wrong.

Sodom, like every other good extreme metal band ever, will be playing
Maryland Deathfest (on the same day as Autopsy, Repulsion, Sadistic Intent and Obliteration, among others), and various festivals this summer. All details on their MySpace,
