Democrats pounced on Donald Trump's running mate, Indiana governor Mike Pence, immediately after the pairing was announced Friday, as USA Todayreports.

In a statement, Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman John Podesta called Trump's choice the "most extreme in a generation." Podesta added that Pence is an "incredibly divisive and unpopular running mate known for supporting discriminatory politics and failed economic policies that favor millionaires and corporations over working families."

Trump was reportedly thinking about backing away from Pence as his VP pick, but ultimately went ahead and made the socially-conservative governor his choice for second-in-command.

Pence has been harshly criticized for a controversial law passed under his watch that essentially made discrimination against the LGBTQ community legal in Indiana.
