As part of Nitehawk Cinema's Live Sound Cinema presentation, they'll be screening the silent horror classic, Vampyr. Here's what their Director of Programming, John Woods, had to say about it:

Dreamlike and atmospheric, Carl Dreyer’s initially under-appreciated Vampyr appears out of the fog and subtly draws you in. Dreyer’s first sound film shot entirely on location in France finds occult student Allan Gray arriving at an inn near the village of Courtempierre. An uninvited visitor leaves a mysterious package in his room and thus begins his journey, where dreams and reality blur together and strange shadows seem to guide him toward an old castle.

After several seemingly chance encounters, Allan remembers the package left in his room at the inn, which leads to his terrifying discovery about the people around him in the village and the existence of spirits and beings of which the villagers live in fear.

Thriving on mood and tonality rather than the traditional storytelling methods, Vampyr moves in and out of reality with striking images, which seem to eerily develop before your eyes in the form of a hallucinatory slow-burn nightmare—perfectly suited to longtime Nitehawk collaborators Black Lodge.
