In Bed(room) With Melbourne Producer Dugong Jr

Dugong Jr takes us on a tour of his bedroom studio.

Welcome to Bedroom Producers' Bedrooms, a new THUMP series where we get to meet our favourite rising beatmakers in their natural environment, the bedroom. Like a private detective or social scientist with no sense of boundaries we rifle through drawers, study walls, and look over shoulders to work out what makes them tick.

First up is 23 year-old Dylan Tainsh. The Melbourne producer's latest project is Dugong Jr, exploring hip hop, experimental club, and euphoric funk. Dugong Jr also operates as part of new future bass and r&b collective "Moving 動く城 Castle". All through October Dugong Jr is on the move, touring nationally, but here's some images from the castle he calls home. All pics courtesy of Dan Biso. The comments between the photos come from Dugong Jr.

People can see right into my apartment which kind of sucks but its worth it for the nice view :)

I'm pretty into my sneakers, just a few of them here (Nike Flight One's/Pennys, Asics Gel Lyte V's)

Holographic unicorn iPhone case, I guess this is pretty inspiring.

THUMP: Hey thanks for letting us see where the magic happens. When did you begin recording?
Dugong Jr: My first Dugong Jr tracks I started recording around 14 months ago.

How has your music evolved from the first sounds to the latest tracks?
When I was younger I was into producing more housey 4x4 kind of stuff. My first signed track on Sweat it Out was kind of disco'y I guess.

What was your first piece of musical equipment/software?
It was an old Yamaha keyboard that my sister used growing up that our cousins had given to us. I used to run it through a multi fx guitar pedal I had and then out of a guitar amp, the results were pretty woeful. As for software the first program I started using was FL studio. I've played around with a few different DAWs since then, but I guess naturally I just came back to FL studio.

What is your favourite piece of equipment, and why?
My Korg M1. I like a lot of the cheap bass and brass sounds it has and it also has a bunch of really bright flutes and stuff that I use a lot.

You're room's pretty neat. Is there a design scheme you're aiming for?
I guess just trying to keep things fun and organic. I have a lot of my friends' artworks around and a few plants and stuff that help to remind me there's a world outside of my apartment.

How important is environment to your music, either the immediate environment, or broader social context?
I think both are pretty important. For me it's important to get out and go to shows, see people playing different kinds of music, and try to draw inspiration from as many sources as possible. In terms of my immediate environment I think it's important that you feel comfortable and have things around you that inspire creativity.

Outside of your room, what's most inspiring to you?
The idea of progressing as an artist and trying to create new ideas and sounds, or represent certain ideas/emotions. That and cute girls <3

See Dugong Jr in the outside world all during October, as he tours Australia.
