The War Against ISIS Is Succeeding, at Least on Twitter

The militant group is losing some of its pull on Twitter, thanks to anti-ISIS propaganda and thousands of account suspensions.

As countries around the planet try to agree on the best way to defeat the Islamic State, the terrorist organization's social media influence is slowly diminishing, as the Associated Press reports.

According to the Obama administration, ISIS's Twitter following has dropped by 45 percent over the last two years, thanks in part to the company's suspension of some 125,000 pro-ISIS accounts, as well as an international coalition that disseminates anti-ISIS memes and images.

The coalition was initially less than successful when it posted anti-ISIS memes and phrases in English. But by promoting posts in Arabic with the help of Muslim-American and other advocacy groups and organizations, attempts to cripple the group's propaganda pull seem to be bearing real fruit.

It's no secret that some members of the militant group have been adept at using social media to attract extremist sympathizers. According to the AP, the typical pro-ISIS account had roughly 1,500 followers back in 2014; those numbers have dwindled to roughly 300 followers since.

ISIS is losing actual ground, too—the Hill reports one new study found the self-described caliphate has lost 12 percent of its turf so far in 2016.
