Jesus Is Coming Back in Mel Gibson's 'Passion of the Christ' Sequel

2 Passion 2 Christ.

Hollywood may be hemorrhaging money this summer as their slew of sequels continue to flop, but that won't stop Mel Gibson from taking a break from starring in Taken rip-offs to direct a sequel to 2004's Jesus torture porn, The Passion of the Christ.

The Hollywood Reporter says that Gibson is in the early stages of developing The Passion of the Christ 2 and has enlisted Braveheart screenwriter Randall Wallace to pen the script. Wallace—who majored in religion at Duke and recently wrote and directed 2014's Heaven Is for Real—told HR that he's excited about the project.

"The Passion is the beginning and there's a lot more story to tell," he said.

Gibson has yet to talk publicly about the movie, but Wallace has high hopes for it. "The evangelical community considers The Passion the biggest movie ever out of Hollywood," he told HR, "and they kept telling us that they think a sequel will be even bigger."

Risenthat recent film that recast the resurrection story as a weird detective thriller—actually did OK in the box office, so Mel's Passion sequel has a shot at being an even bigger success than the original, even if it was basically garbage.
