Earlier this week, news broke that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie had filed for divorce, prompting a slew of Jennifer Aniston memes and an immediate separation of the actors' wax statues.

A day later, reports started popping up that Pitt was under investigation by the LAPD for "allegedly getting verbally abusive and physical with his children," according to TMZ. The LAPD, though, say the reports are just rumors.

"We have no criminal investigation that we are actively pursuing," LAPD sergeant Barry Montgomery told the Hollywood Reporter on Thursday.

"We are not investigating any case, nor do we have any allegations against Mr. Pitt. We understand how rumors get spun up, and hopefully we can put a few of them to rest. We have no investigation involving Mr. Pitt."

Jolie and Pitt first got together on set while filming the 2005 action-comedy Mr. & Mrs. Smith. They have six kids together.

UPDATE 9/22/16: TMZ reports that, though the LAPD is not investigating the child abuse allegations, the FBI is looking into it. The alleged incident took place on a private jet in flight between France and the US, so it falls under the FBI's jurisdiction.
