Obama Will Hand Over His Twitter Handle Along with the Presidency

Obama's departure from the White House also marks the first time a president will have to transfer his social media accounts to his successor.

Obama's inevitable departure from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue marks the first time a president will also need to make a peaceful digital transition of power, as he'll have to hand over all his social media accounts to his successor.

The White House announced on Monday that the next commander-in-chief will take over the @POTUS Twitter handle, along with Obama's 11 million followers. Obama's current Twitter feed will then move to @POTUS44. His Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube channels will take on new URLs, leaving the next president with a clean slate to post whatever and whenever he or she chooses.

The National Archives and Records Administration will also archive all of the tweets posted from the @WhiteHouse, @FLOTUS, @PressSec, and @VP handles, in the same way the administration archives emails and letters throughout a president's tenure. That means you'll be able to check out that photo of the sweet friendship bracelets Joe Biden made for Obama for his birthday for many years to come.

Although it took a little while for Obama to warm up to Twitter, it didn't take long before he mastered it and used it for a force of good. The New York Times already gave us a pretty good idea of what a Trump-run POTUS social media platform could look like, but Hillary Clinton might be a little more reserved, although she seems pretty savvy herself.
