Peter Sutherland's "Secrets of the Valley"

Peter Sutherland has a new show at Still House Group's space in Red Hook. It's got tie-dyed fabric, a magnified candle melted the wrong way, and a hacky sack.

A couple of months ago I interviewed Peter Sutherland for this very website and he told me about a residency he was doing at Still House Group's new space in Red Hook and how awesome it was (rooftop BBQs!). He also mentioned that he would be showing the work he did over his three-month residency sometime in September, and last weekend he did just that with an exhibition called Secrets of the Valley.

Peter had a lot of room to work at the Still House space, which allowed him to work in larger formats. It was nice to see the transition from Peter's classic photo work to sculpture and painting. I noticed that a conversation existed between his and the other work in the Still House space. The objects in both were sometimes simple things you might overlook—like sand, sex wax, or toilet paper—yet the media is pushed past its purpose and into directions where it becomes very attractive work.

Peter's sense of humor came through in each piece. There was an insanely long bleached out tie-dyed roll of fabric, a hackie sack sitting atop a swirling gradient sand painting, and a magnified candle melted the wrong way.

If you'd like to see the exhibit, you should click here to make an appointment.
