The Sick Day Issue

Meet the People Who Put Together the September Issue of VICE Magazine

Saul Elbein, Morgan Jerkins, Michael Lundgren, Stefanie Moshammer, and Gianna Toboni are our employees of the month.

SAUL ELBEIN

Saul Elbein just got back from two years of nomadic reporting across Latin America and Southeast Asia, investigating murder and illegal mining and the best places to smoke a clandestine joint. He's written lots of words for the New York Times Magazine, the New Republic, the Texas Observer, and the late, lamented Al Jazeera America. He once talked his way out of custody on the Argentine border by lecturing the guards on the actual appearance of ecstasy, which he swears he didn't have in his pocket.

Her work has been featured in the New Yorker, the New York Times, BuzzFeed, the Atlantic, and ELLE, among many other publications. Her debut essay collection, This Will Be My Undoing, is forthcoming from Harper Perennial. A Princeton alumna with an MFA from the Bennington Writing Seminars, Jerkins's work focuses on the intersections of race and gender, literature, feminism, and pop culture. In this month's issue, she profiles comedian and podcast host Phoebe Robinson.

MICHAEL LUNDGREN

Photographer Michael Lundgren works collaboratively with scientists, writers, and artists on historically and socially engaged bodies of work, but his true passion is the poetic potential of the medium. His first monograph, Transfigurations (2008), is an evolution of the modernist search for form within a primitive landscape. Award-winning publisher Radius Books will be releasing Lundgren's second monograph, Matter, in late September. After growing up in the woods and fields of upstate New York, he now lives and works in the Sonoran Desert.

Stefanie Moshammer

Stefanie Moshammer was born in Vienna in 1988, graduated from the Fashion School of Vienna, and received a bachelor of arts in graphic design and photography at the University of Arts and Industrial Design Linz. In 2015, FOTOHOF edition published her first photo book, Vegas and She. Her work plays on the boundaries between documentary and art, touching on subjects of subculture, intimacy, and ambiguity. In our cover story, complete with surreal, neon-yellow squiggles, she traveled to Rio de Janeiro to embed herself in the colors and the people.
