Submit to 33 1/3's Open Call for Proposals So You Can Get Paid to Nerd Out About an Album

Unfortunately, you can't write about the 'Super Mario Bros.' soundtrack because someone already beat you to it.

For the past decade, 33 1/3 book series have been paying music writers to write entire books about their favorite album. Some of these books focus on the history surrounding the album, like Kevin Courrier's Trout Mask Replica. Others take a more analytical approach, like Dai Griffiths' compositional breakdown of OK Computer. Jonathan Lethem wrote a 30,000-word ode to the Talking Heads' Fear of Music that was less about the album and more about his teenage years in New York City. There isn't a hard and fast formula for a 33 1/3 book—you just have to be a music nerd willing to write 100 pages about how revolutionary Crazy Rhythms by the Feelies is.

If you feel confident that you are this caliber of music nerd, 33 1/3 wants to hear your pitches. The company just put out an open call for new book proposals which means that anyone and everyone can submit an idea and be considered for their next round of books. Do you feel a great, insuppressible desire to rant about the guitar tones on Pulp's This Is Hardcore? Now's your chance to make it a reality.

Submissions are open until Monday, July 27, so start working on those proposals. Unfortunately, you can't write about the Super Mario Bros. soundtrack because someone already beat you to it.
