Swopes In The Sky

Surrealistic graphic designer and photographer Elise Swopes captures her everyday life in Chicago through a unique perspective.

Ever since I can remember, I loved anything that had to do with a computer — whether it'd be designing, teaching myself whatever my heart desired from the handy dial-up AOL search or just simply talking to friends.

I grew up designing websites, playing with pixels, and things of that nature. When I was in 6th grade, I owned a website that taught others how to design websites of their own. Growing older, I would design websites and logos for friends, my art and style changing with the wave of the internet — I remember a friend of mine who traded cheeseburgers at lunch for MySpace layouts. It seemed like a plausible business plan.

I had never thought of myself as a photographer until I started on Instagram. All the web and design skills I had mastered growing up all came together in the perfect social network allowing me to share my work with way more people than I ever imagined. In time, I grew to become more surrealistic — waterfalls in the middle of Chicago, moon shaped cityscapes and of course, giraffes. Always giraffes. I love the way photography makes every day different for me. I'm always in search of something new or simply a different angle. Sometimes I'll take the orange line, sometimes the brown, you can see it in my photos that I really love to surprise my eye.

I enjoy my morning coffee while catching up with my Instagram feed before I head out. The way the Canon EOS 80D catches tones is just unbelievable.

On a really, really great day I have a wonderful camera in my hands. Luckily, today, I do. With the Canon EOS 80D DSLR and an 18-135mm lens in tow, I set off for another adventure through the city to capture new photos. I get on the train when it arrives and take a video from the window. I have no plan, just hoping I capture something special.

A ride on the CTA is one of the most photogenic in the world. Here I used the Canon EOS 80D's internal time-lapse. Speeding it up was key to portraying the fast pace life of the city.

My personal favorite is when a camera has WIFI functionality for easy editing on-the-go on my phone. The Canon EOS 80D does just that with the simple to use Camera Connect app by Canon.

I step off the train downtown near the Chicago River. From there I enjoy the city atmosphere: the bustling amount of people, the sound of cars honking, and the colossal city architecture. I'm constantly building an image in my head, and my eyes are on the lookout for interesting things around me.

One of my favorite buildings in Chicago, the good old Wrigley Building. The wonderful autofocus of the Canon EOS 80D, along with the Canon 18-135mm lens with image stabilizer, allowed me to get up close and personal to it. When I shot this, the sky was actually empty and blue so I added a separate photo of some cloud I shot the day before and I added a silhouette of some birds.

The 24.2 Megapixel sensor of the Canon EOS 80D is a man's best friend with the great ability to give super high-resolution images.

I take a stroll through Millennium Park. Not only do I capture a bunch of Pokemon, but I also get a ton of great photos. I don't have a plan for them just yet, but when I start editing, my vision will become more clear.

I absolutely love giraffes and I love my city, a perfect couple for a wonderful photo.

A friend of mine works at the Chicago Helicopter Express, and he invited me on a ride up above Chicago. I grew up staring at the skyscrapers from below, shooting them from every which angle. Up above, I'm eye level with them and my whole perspective shifts. My time up there in the helicopter was pretty speedy, so the quick shooting at 7fps was necessary and very helpful. The Canon EOS 80D acted when I really needed it. I drop back down to the ground having felt very successful in my day. It's hard to believe just a few moments ago I was on top of Chicago. Luckily, my photos are proof.

While in a helicopter I was able to capture the city with the high-speed continuous shooting at 7fps.

Here's another helicopter shot. The sunset this day was so beautiful! Unlike most of my photos, the clouds were actually there.
Lens: Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. Shot at 50mm. Canon EOS 80D: 1/2,656 sec, f/5.6, ISO 500, 7fps, autofocus.
