This Ad for Thai Skin-Whitening Pills Promises 'Whiteness Makes You Win'

There's also some blackface, just to drive the point home.

Skin whitening pills, lotions, and terrifying black market injections are already big business in Africa and Asia, regardless of the fact that the stuff is basically poison. This week, a new advertising campaign for Thai skin whitening pills has taken the whole fad to its logical, racist extreme—complete with blackface and a tagline that promises "whiteness makes you win."

According to the Guardian, the ad—created by skincare company Seoul Secret for their product "Snowz"—features Thai mega-celebrity Cris Horwang basically attributing her stardom to her radiant, pale skin.

"Before I got to this point the competition was very high," Horwang says. "If I stop taking care of myself"—using the skin whitening products—"everything I have worked for, the whiteness I have invested in, may be lost."

Snowz, Horwang promises, will "help you not return to being dark." Then she morphs into a bizarro, blackface version of herself.

The advertisement was met with almost immediate criticism when it debuted online Wednesday. Seoul Secret has since responded, pulling the ad and claiming innocence.

The company "did not have any intention to convey discriminatory or racist messages," they said in a statement. "Currently, we have removed the video clip, related advertisements, and other planned materials to show our responsibility in this incident."
