VICE Exclusive: Nikola Tesla & Thee Coils Are My Favorite Russian Psychedelic Rock Band

There's a burgeoning psychedelic rock revival scene in Moscow right now, and these guys are at its forefront.

There's a burgeoning psychedelic rock revival scene in Moscow right now, and Nikola Tesla & Thee Coils are at its forefront. The band's stage presence reminds me of bands like Goat and even Sun City Girls—they wear spooky masks and play weirdo rock songs that will remind you of a time when people wore flowers in their hair and still had hope. They also clearly really like Thee Oh Sees, to the point of integrating "Thee" into their name and titling one of their songs "John Dwyer." Nikola Tesla & Thee Coils's debut album, Buckwheat Tongue, is about to come out on Little L Records, a Dublin-based label that champions a diverse worldwide roster of up-and-coming bands. This is one of the songs off the record, titled "Suck on Robbers' Blood." It's coming out May 11.
