Alex Gibney

VICE Meets

We recently caught up with documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney on a rare break from his insane production schedule. Winning an Oscar in 2008 for Taxi to the Dark Side seems to have put Gibney’s already successful career in hyper-drive. In 2010, he had four film releases and he is currently in post-production for two more that are slated for 2011 release. We have been Gibney fans since we saw Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room and Gonzo: the Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, which tackled the unique life story of the celebrated rogue journalist and author of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

We met Gibney at the Toronto Film Festival to chat about his latest film, Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Elliot Spitzer. The film is Gibney’s account of the career of the much-maligned ex-governor of New York. It scrutinizes, amongst other things, Spitzer’s knack to piss off powerful enemies with his take no prisoners approach to governing and, of course, his predilection for high-priced whores.
