An extremely well-known figure in the criminal reporting scene in the Netherlands, de Vries had long covered major gang wars between high level drug organisations based out of the country. He had recently acted as a spokesperson and adviser for “Nabil B,” a witness in a major drug case whose previous lawyer was assassinated in 2019.
He was shot the evening of the 6th of July as he left the studios of Dutch television network RTL in central Amsterdam. Two men confronted him outside the studio and fired five shots, at least one of which struck de Vries in the head. Two men are currently in custody in connection with the shooting.
"Peter fought to the end, but was unable to win the battle," his relatives wrote in a statement. "We are immensely proud of him and at the same time inconsolable."
