Editorial Statement Regarding Photographs of Khmer Rouge Victims

From VICE editorial leadership
Preview-VICE-Media-White

On Friday April 9th, VICE Asia published an interview with Matt Loughrey, an artist working to restore and colorize images from Security Prison 21 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, which was used by the Khmer Rouge regime from 1975 until its fall in 1979. The article included photographs of Khmer Rouge victims that Loughrey manipulated beyond colorization. The story did not meet the editorial standards of VICE and has been removed. We regret the error and will investigate how this failure of the editorial process occurred.

Update April 16, 2021: We have been taking the time over the past few days to review what has happened with the Matt Loughrey article.

We are deeply sorry for any pain this has caused and sincerely apologize to the families of the victims and the communities in Cambodia. We have begun outreach in private with community groups and individuals to address this.

We continue to strive for the highest level of rigor when it comes to these checks and balances in our stories and will redouble these efforts to ensure this does not happen again.
