VICE: Who do we have here?
Richard Kern: This was probably in ’97, something like that, and this was a girl I was shooting in LA for Barely Legal, I think. Right around the time I started shooting for Barely Legal I realized, “Wow, I’m getting $2,000 for shooting one afternoon!” That was unbelievable.

Do they give you girls or do you have to come up with your own?
You have to come up with your own girls, yeah. There are a bunch of agents in LA who can hook you up with models. I can’t remember where I got her from, but I remember I had to drive like two hours outside of LA and into the suburbs to find her. She was in one of those horrible apartment complexes in the middle of nowhere in Southern California. It was of those things where I wasn’t really into the girl, but I did end up selling the set and a bunch of these photos. Also, Damien Loeb used this picture in a painting.

I like the towel.
You meet people and you go to their apartment and there’s absolutely no character in their apartment. Nowadays it’s a couch from IKEA, a table, a TV, there might be some weird plant thing, and maybe a thumbtack stuck on the wall with some beads or something, whatever that means. This apartment was like that. I looked around for stuff—I mean, this was literally the only thing I could have her doing in the whole house.

Another thing for me with this girl was she had a kid—has a kid—and it was the first time I noticed some of the things that come when you have kids. Her nipples were different, the puss was different—you can’t see it here, but.… It was my first time experiencing that. I can’t remember if I felt that was cool, or not cool, or whatever. And I couldn’t tell you what I think now, either. But I did notice there was a big difference. I really notice it now—I can tell in about two seconds if a woman’s had a kid.
