Why Are You Doing This? The Dark Monk

Kοινοποίηση

What attracted me first and foremost to The Dark Monk’s new album, True Underlord, was that upon first glance I thought it was a computer video game. And by saying “computer video game” I’m not just trying to say “video game” in some sort of humorous way, I’m talking about those games you’d buy from Walmart many years ago to play on your PC workstation. I never really got into video games much and always sort of saw them as a waste of time wherein you spend endless hours completing tasks and challenges that don’t benefit you IRL and could, down the road, turn you into a lonely serial killer. But it’s all okay because this isn’t a video game, it’s an album. An album that poses the question, “Can the Darkmonk stop the evil global leader and his army of cyborgs?” I don’t know. Can he?

I had a lot of thoughts about True Underlord before I even opened it up. Once I opened it up I had even MORE thoughts. Here are a few of them:

– What is this?

– I still think this is supposed to be a video game.

– What are the main themes here? Space? Monks in space? Rapping in space? There’s a lot going on.

– I like how on the cover of the album the Evil Global Leader is circled in yellow as if to say “here he is.”

– The “N Word” is said even in space. Even on the moon we cannot escape racism. Makes me sad.

– The insert for this album shows a picture of an intergalactic fight scenescape on one side of the fold, and an abandoned tank on the other. I think you should make a conscious choice to pick which you like best; space, or tanks, and just go with one.

– It’s mysterious that when you load True Underlord into Itunes the track titles don’t show up. This leads me to believe that The Dark Monk made this on his computer at home and sells copies outside of subway entrances. Yes? No?

– I’ve listened to this album from front to back and back again, twice, and the actual music contained on it has not, in any way, registered in my brain. I’m still left with the general thought: “what?”

– What?

– I can’t stop looking at the album art for this. The picture on the very back shows The Dark Monk leaving some sort of exercise room carrying a skateboard and wearing a gold cat mask. Do you think that maybe he’s going home to think some more about tanks and space? I bet he’s going home to think more about tanks and space.
