13 People Were Shot at a Gun Violence Victim's Memorial in Chicago

Gunfire turned a memorial service into a crime scene in Chicago on Sunday, leaving more than a dozen people injured, some critically.

Authorities said they’ve arrested 37-year-old Marciano White in connection with the shooting, after catching him trying to flee the scene with a weapon. White, a convicted felon, has been charged him with one count of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, WMAQ reported.

Authorities said a gunman appeared to fire indiscriminately, with shots ringing out in an apartment as people tried to leave the memorial. Police said the shooting stemmed from some sort of argument and that more than one person fired a weapon. Parts of the incident were captured on video.

“From outside, definitely there was two different shooters,” Fred Waller, who heads the patrol division for Chicago police, told reporters. “It looked like they were just shooting randomly at people as they exited the party.”

The celebration was honoring Lonnell Irvin, a 22-year-old who was killed in April when he allegedly attempted a carjacking, the Chicago Tribune reported. The victims ranged in age from 16 to 48. Four of the victims were in critical condition, including a 28-year-old woman who was shot in the chest and a 21-year-old man who was shot in the back, reported Block Club Chicago.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot urged people to come forward with information.

“It’s a terrible tragedy and frankly an act of cowardice,” Lightfoot said. “People in that house know what happened, and we urge them to overcome their fears and come forward with information.”

Gun violence has fallen in Chicago over the past few years, but continues to be a problem for the city. According to the Chicago Tribune, 2,594 people have been shot in the city this year, which is 248 fewer than in 2019.

The last time 13 or more people were injured in a Chicago shooting was 2013, when gunmen opened fire at a basketball court in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, according to Tribune records.
