Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church, a black church in Greenville, Mississippi, was burned and defaced with pro-Trump graffiti Tuesday night, WJTV reports.

Police and fire crews extinguishing the fire found the words "Vote Trump" spray-painted across the building's side. Photos of the church show extensive fire damage to the main sanctuary.

It's not yet clear if the fire was arson or if the political message is connected, but according to the Atlantic, Greenville mayor Errick Simmons said he considers the fire a "direct assault on people's right to free worship," and it is being investigated as a hate crime in cooperation with the feds.

"We're very cautious in this climate, in this day and time," Simmons said, "to make sure we're very deliberate in investigating matters like this."

A GoFundMe page is currently raising money to repair the church.
