Carnival, despite its reputation for riots, gang violence, police brutality and rain, is unequivocally my favourite weekend of the year. If done badly it can involve miles and miles of queues to nowhere, expensive warm beer, shouting into a phone but hearing nothing, American tourists, queuing for an hour to use the toilet in some crackhead's flat, getting lost, Norman Jay, never finding your friends and watching a bunch of piss-poor floats move very slowly down streets full of coppers. However, if done right, you can spend two days dancing in the sunshine to great music in some pretty amazing surroundings. I won’t go into a long-winded explanation of where and when to go as there is so much to see and so much of it is excellent, but here are a few spots/things that always get me excited about carnival…Talbot Road
Talbot Road and the surrounding area is home to plenty of great soundsystems. Gaz’s Rockin’ Blues (shown below) do a brilliant job of decorating their soundsystem. The music is predominately ska/r’n‚Äòb/soul.
Corn on the cob
The food at carnival is nearly always amazing. Corn on the cob, ackee and rice, jerk chicken and curry goat are pretty safe bets.
Girls, girls, girls
Diplo and Switch: PartyI normally avoid parties at carnival like the plague. Why queue up for hours to go to an indoor party, when there are 250+ free ones outside? But this is pretty special. I’ve heard a couple of tracks off this album and it's wild. If it rains, expect this to get RAMMED.(If you’re really short of ideas and want to pop down, email us on theyoungturks@theyoungturks.co.uk and we’ll happily let you know about some fun stuff to do.)YOUNG TURKS
