SNOW FILM FEST STARTS TONIGHT

It just occurred to us that when we put up the announcement for the VBS movies being screened at the Snow Film Fest this weekend, there's a slight possibility that you (the reader) do not know who either Shawn Farmer or Todd Richards are.

Whether this is by dint of not being that interested in snowboarding or of not having the means to regularly shell out hella mazool for lift tickets, equipment, et al, we decided to correct the problem by asking each of the film's directors/editors to tell us what they all about. Take it away, boys:

"'Todd Richards is an aging fossil in a world of young upstarts,' is how Todd describes himself in movie-trailer voice during the making of Todcast the Movie. He's been a professional snowboarder for close to two decades now, and whereas he used to win contests and once held a spot on the Olympic team, now he's better known for his sonorous announcing voice, and as a general TV/Internet personality. Through his years he's come to terms with the inherent absurdity of "extreme" sports and now his Todcast series does its best to fight the good fight (aka take the piss out of them). Our movie is about him doing that."

JAKE BURGHART

"I produced/edited all of Powder and Rails Season 2, including the Shawn Farmer episode, alone in my parents' living room while sitting at the desk my grandma bought me in elementary school. I had to put a shoe box on top of the desk to elevate my laptop because I'm 6'5" and the desk is so low I have to grind my crotch into its underside just to sit down. So that Farmer episode, which I made by myself in rural western Pennsylvania, was chosen as an official honoree by the Webbys, standing alongside work from places like ESPN, HBO Sports, and the LA Times. I'm sure they had actual film crews and produced their pieces in studios as opposed to my set up. Here's the link to that honoree list.

Anyway, I don't have much else to say about it other than I was proud and that I thought it was pretty hilarious that I was able to make something with a laptop on top of a shoe box that was just as good as stuff the other "professionals" did in big budget studios. I didn't win a Webby for it or anything, but I feel like I won something by having it sit next to all those other shows about "real" sports.

Oh yeah, and on top of that whole rant, I'm honored to have been included in the Snow Fest. Having something you made be a part of a film festival in NYC is pretty cool to me. Where I come from New York seems like an untouchable universe."
