STOCKHOLM - THE SPACETIME COLLAGE CONTINUUM

The students of the Lillholm School in Stockholm (you’ve previously read about them here, here, and here) recently put together an exhibition called "Dream Trips." They all picked a dream destination—a place or point in time they would otherwise never experience—and then placed themselves in that moment through the power of collage. It’s a lot like the Argentinian female prisoner collages we featured a few issues back, but more hopeful and less family-oriented. Keep reading to see where the kids would rather be, with captions by the artists.

PAIlkay Emlek Goes to Cuba in 1958

The year is 1958, and I'm here talking to Che Guevara. Fidel seems excited as he tells the guard that no one is allowed into the office because we shouldn’t be disturbed. We're discussing how we're going to cease the power from Batista. The difficult thing is that he has support from the USA, which makes it hard for us. The room is pretty small and smells of cigar and I'm telling Ernesto that he has to quit smoking because he's got asthma, but he just laughs at me. I chose this picture because it's an important event in history and I think it's a good picture, because you don't understand what Fidel is doing. The reason I'm standing up is because I just got here.

Ilkay Emlek Goes to New Zealand

I’m in New Zealand. I’ve just arrived on a business trip. The bus ride from the airport was long. I don’t think it’s appropriate to wear a suit at the beach, but I listen to the parrots and they are pretty. There’s a boat at sea, it’s a luxury boat and it is really nice. It’s extremely hot here, and I’m in the shade but I’m sweating all the same in my good-looking suit. I have to leave now because I’m here for a meeting.

I chose this picture because I feel like swimming in a warm country—Sweden isn’t very warm right now, and in my dream that country looks exactly like this. But there is also a villa that belongs to me, it is outside the picture.

Nadia Al Khatib Is the Astronaut of the Future

I’ve just gotten back from the moon and it was really fun! When I first started floating in space it was a bit scary, but it got a lot better. It was gray and dull on the moon, but when I walked I jumped far and that was fun. The equipment was heavy and it was hard walking in it, but before we went up there we practiced in a training center for astronauts. The view from the moon was really pretty! The earth looked so beautiful, in a way you’ve never seen before. Small, but you can still imagine all the life on it! Going up was really scary—what if the pod broke? When it was time to go back down I felt sad because I hadn’t had the time to see all the things I wanted to see. When we got down to earth again I thanked God that we had survived. It was fun because when we got back everyone asked what it had been like and everyone wanted to interview me.

I chose this picture because it’s always been a big dream of mine to travel into space. Traveling to space and seeing all the things that you can’t see from earth would be a big thing. The picture shows that everyone can go into space, according to me.

Delin Darbas Has a Secret Smile!

I’m sitting here in my room. Maybe it looks like I’m up on a mountain while Leonardo is painting my portrait, but actually it’s a painting behind me that I made. I’m an artist too. I’ve always wanted to be famous both as an artist and as a model, and finally I will be thanks to Leonardo who wants to paint my picture. He says that I have a secretive smile! It’s pretty tough to just sit here without moving, so I need to be patient. I can only move when I have a drink of water or when I eat one of the cookies that I keep beside me, or maybe I can stretch if Leonardo gets tired. I’ve been sitting here for about three hours now and I’m really, really tired. When the water and cookies run out I will ask my servant to get me some more.

I chose Mona Lisa because I’ve heard about her, and so much has been said about her. What I’ve heard about Mona Lisa is that she had a secretive smile and that the painting is so valuable it doesn’t even have a price tag. The painting is made by Leonardo da Vinci, using oil paint.

Ajmal Omid Is Back in Afghanistan, Outside His Village

Here I stand with a few friends outside our village and we’re getting photographed by American soldiers. I was playing with my friends outside and it started to rain so I ran home and went to bed. I felt tired and after a while I fell asleep. I slept for about one or two hours and then I heard my friends call my name. They said that the American soldiers were here. I woke up and ran out quickly. There were soldiers in front of us and we started to say stuff like, "How are you?" and "Thank you" with thumbs up because that was all the English we knew. We thought it was fun to talk to them even though we didn’t understand anything. They were very nice. A little later came a guy from our village who could speak English and they talked to each other and we just stood and watched. Before they had to leave, they took out a camera and told us to stand by this wall. They took pictures and we started playing again after they.

I’ve chosen this particular picture from Afghanistan because I miss my home country and my friends and cousins—all the people I’ve known there. I look forward to going there soon.

Ajmal Omid Is in Real Madrid

It was a tough game between our team, Real Madrid, and Barcelona. I scored two goals and it felt good and a little bit later Ronaldo scored one and Zidane did a header too. Barcelona only scored two goals on us, Ronaldinho and Henry scored one each. There was 10 minutes left in the game when a ball suddenly hit me right in the head. I got dizzy but luckily the referee blew the whistle to show that the game was over. The final score was 4-2. It felt good to win the in the championship against Barcelona. We jumped around a lot on the field, out of joy and pride, and the crowd clapped and yelled. They were shouting "REAL MADRID, REAL MADRID, REAL MADRID". Later me and my teammates received medals because we had fought so well, and everyone took pictures and many filmed us too. I didn’t look very happy in the photos because I couldn’t smile. My head hurt really bad, and I was starving hungry. I could smell hamburgers and that made me even hungrier. I mostly just craved food and wanted to go home and rest because my head hurt and I didn’t feel so good.

I’ve chosen this picture because I like Real Madrid’s team and my dream is to become a football player and join their team. Ronaldo and Zidane are my favorite players for Real Madrid.
