Studio Ghibli creator and animation legend Hayao Miyazaki is currently working on his first 3D animated film, a 10-minute short that will reportedly take three years to complete. But for those fans who require a quick Miyazaki fix, dig Princess Mononoke in full-on 8-bit glory.

Created by CineFix, this lo-fi remix presents Prince Mononoke in their signature “old-school 8-bit (and a little 16-bit)” game aesthetic. “No quarters or controllers required, just some Studio Ghibli awesomeness mixed up with old-school style!!,” CineFix announced on YouTube.

This fusion of Studio Ghibli’s refined, ethereal visuals and storytelling with 8-bit game play is extremely charming, even funny at times. It's sure to make some imagine what might have been, had Miyazaki become a game designer instead of an animator.
