Police are investigating a West Auckland McDonald’s after customers claimed they’d started finding prescription pills in their sundaes.

It’s not yet clear what the drugs were, or how they got into the sundaes.

The New Zealand Herald has reported two people say they visited the Te Atatu McDonald's on Wednesday night and ordered sundaes—but discovered halfway through that there was prescription medication in their frozen desserts.

One of them said it started when her sister, while eating her sundae, complained about "an extremely funny taste".

"So we thought, 'OK, better complain to them'. My partner and my sister went to leave when I found one [pill] in mine. We went straight to hospital, they said it was someone's medication. But it's not enough to do any damage so suggested keeping going with police."

Police confirmed to the Herald they were investigating.

"Police have received a complaint relating to an incident where two people claimed that there were pills in their ice creams that were purchased from a fast food restaurant in West Auckland yesterday evening," said Detective Senior Sergeant Roger Small, Waitakere Police.

McDonald's told the Herald they were cooperating with the police investigation.

"We've also reviewed CCTV and provided this to police. Normal procedures were followed and there was nothing untoward in the filling and operation of equipment, or as the order was made and handed to the customer in drive-thru," a spokesperson said.
