New York - Interview With Sarah Silverman Part 1

Sarah Silverman (the hot chick from Mr. Show) has always been a loser. She grew up as the only Jew in New Hampshire and that made her legs seem super hairy her whole childhood. Then she went to NYU and things started to look up but then—fart—she discovered she was allergic to booze. Then she went to L.A. to become a movie star, but was told she was too Jewy (unlike Winona Horowitz who made it rich as Winona Ryder). As of this year, however, things have finally started to look up. Her stand-up routine became a movie called Jesus is Magic and all that led to her own show. Who's laughing now, you New Hampshire goy cocksuckers!

VICE: How much did you get for the movie?
Sarah: Not much. A flat fee. The whole budget for the whole movie and soundtrack was $1 million and Liam [Lynch—the director] and I were paid out of that, so you can imagine. I'm hoping people will buy the DVD. It's the only way I get money. I'm the poorest semi-celebrity anyone knows. You've seen my apartment.

I went to meet you after a show once but before we could go anywhere you had to sign some autographs. Don't you think autographs are lame?
I didn't want to be rude to them.

—but you always sign them. Why do celebrities sign autographs? First of all: What does it mean to that guy? That, "I was near a famous person once for about seven seconds"? Or is it just to sell it? But then the same question pops up. What does the person who buys it want it for?
I have no fucking clue but I figure what business is it of mine. Truly, people wanting an autograph rarely feels personal in any way—like there's actually something about me they like that a signature can embody for them. I just do it because it would be weirder not to.

Didn't your mom hand you a bunch of programs from your show that she wanted you to sign for some cousin whose sole sustenance is selling those things on eBay?
Yeah, but don't shit on my mom. She didn't know better and thought it would be a nice gesture like, "This is great! Lacy can make money from this!"
