There's been a lot of focus recently on the mess of a situation in a little town in the far north west of Australia called Wadeye (pronounced Wad-air). It has the largest Aboriginal community in the country and is being torn apart by gangs who take their names directly from their favourite metal bands. Pretty much everyone who lives in Wadeye is a member of one of the two main gangs —The Judas Priest Boys and the Evil Warriors (the name of a song by Florida death metal band, Possessed). Then there are the smaller gangs who have their own identities and agendas but generally align themselves with one of the two main gangs. There's Lica (as in the end of Metallica) Warriors, Mad Warriors, Fear Factory, Big T (taken from the band Testament), the German Punks, the White Lions and the Cowboys From Hell (the name of a Pantera album from 91).The town of Wadeye was created in the 1930s when 20 different Aboriginal clans were pulled together to make it easier to deliver basic services to them. The problem started around about the same time when it turned out none of the clans actually got along and none of the services were ever properly delivered. Of the 2,500 people that live there now, half are under 15 years old and most have never been to school. There is barely any housing (it's not uncommon for up to20 people to live in one house) or jobs, sexual and physical abuse is rife and the gangs devote the rest of their time to trashing the few remaining houses which means most of the women and children have left and are living in tents in surrounding areas like Darwin. A genius Government initiative launched around 2002 to restore some kind of order to the place has managed to change absolutely fucking nothing and with a grand total of five police officers based there, the place is likely to resemble hell for a lot longer.
