Americans Are More Bisexual Than Ever, Study Says

Americans are having more same-sex hookups than ever before, according a new study from Florida State University, San Diego State University, and Widener University researchers.

The study's researchers looked at decades of results from the General Social Survey—which has been putting together a nationally representative look at our sex lives, among other things, since 1972—and focused on questions asking participants how wrong they thought homosexuality was, as well as how many same-sex encounters they've had.

Researchers found that the percentage of Americans that say they've had a same-sex experience doubled since the early 1990s for both men and women.

While the number of same-sex encounters remained relatively consistent among people who choose to fuck same-sex partners full time, the amount of bisexual behavior shot up from 3.1 percent to almost 8 percent. Basically, more Americans are giving same-sex experiences a shot, rather than sticking to just the P or the V for their entire lives. The highest increase in reported same-sex encounters came from the South and the Midwest.

The results suggest a major cultural shift in the way the country thinks about sex, which researchers believe could be thanks to a wider representation of LGBT lives in the media, as well as the availability of social media networking apps to help people facilitate hookups. The rise in acceptance could also mean that people just feel more comfortable copping to a sexual encounter with the same sex, because it's not as big of a deal as it was in the past.
