YouTube Retaliation Inspires Video Game

Brazilians create a video game based on one teenager’s triumph over a bully.

The latest YouTube phenomenon is a bit more sinister than your standard cuddly kitten fare. This shocking new video shows Casey Heynes, a 16-year-old Australian victim of schoolyard violence, fighting back against one of his tormentors.

The clip captures Heynes attacking an aggressor who bothers his assumed victim repeatedly. As Heynes shifts the dynamics of power in their interaction, he retaliates with a tactic similar to one that the fighter Zangief of the Street Fighter series uses. The video soon became one of the most commented on YouTube, and Heynes was nicknamed “The Zangief Kid.”

A group of Brazilian developers decided to pay tribute to Heynes’s heroism via video game. Zangief Kid: The Game gives everyone the chance to portray the young avenger. Developed in Unity3D in just over a week, the simple game can be played on the developer's page. There isn't an ultimate goal–the idea is just to embody the wrath of the Zangief Kid, and to hang around school practicing his famous fighting move.

The good news for creative developers is that the game, licensed under Creative Commons, can be changed and improved at will, as long as its authorship is maintained.
