Written Images may be the first art book to have each copy uniquely generated via computer program, and we can think of no better way of capturing and conveying the ever-elusive beauty of code-based art than this bespoke take on book publishing. Created in collaboration with more than 70 media artists and developers from around the world, this project from Martin Fuchs and Peter Bichsel seeks to present 42 image generating software programs designed by some of the leading artists in today’s creative coding community, including Casey Reas, Marius Watz, Golan Levin, Nervous System, Flight404, and many others. Here’s what you can expect to find in the book:The visual and technical content of these submitted works are very varied. Many different programming languages and tools were used and all of the programs visualize dynamic structures. Others also use data taken from the internet, show weather forecasts, news reports or public webcams. Graphic renditions vary from highly abstract to realistic….In order to understand the visual development of the images, every program will generate images for four subsequent pages in the book. Additionally, every artist and workpiece will be presented in a short text. also descriptions of the used programming languages and environment will be given. The book begins with a preface by Bruce Sterling, a US science fiction writer and blogger. The project is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter, but given the strength of its concept, its stellar line-up of artists, and the fact that digital art heavyweights like Gray Area Foundation For The Arts, Bruce Sterling, and Christiane Paul have thrown their support behind it, we’re confident that it’ll meet and exceed its goal. That being said, we highly encourage you to go and donate or reserve a copy of the book for yourself—there are only 200 of them available, after all.
